The Cub Scouts recently held their Pinewood Derby. This is an opportunity for boys and their responsible adults to bond over power tools. While I'm the one who brought the power tools into the marriage, the Ceremonial Building of the Pinewood Car is a ritual presided over by my husband, Mr. Cubmaster.
The weekend before the Derby found Ten panicking and pestering his dad to help him get going on the construction of his car. It found me wondering how many trips to the Scout Store and the hardware store would be needed to complete this project.
Despite my insistence that Power Tools are Outside Toys, the pinewood-car construction zone of choice was my dining-room table. I did put my foot down when the subject of Spray Paint came up. Fortunately for my sanity and my furniture, they took the spray-painting outside.
Some of the boys are sons of engineers and carpenters. My husband is neither of those, and my son's cars always reflect that. Much celebration ensued when Ten's car made it through two rounds of racing without losing any wheels or axles.
